How to Increase your Gut Microbial Diversity

According to Dr Jason Hawrelek, a senior lecturer at the University of Tasmania the best thing you can do is eat a wide diversity of whole plant foods. Dr Hawrelek suggests you aim to eat at least 40 different types of plant foods every week. Microbiome diversity is associated with good health and resilience to perturbations, while lack of diversity is associated with obesity, type 2 diabetes and inflammatory bowel diseases.

Dr Hawrelek gave a presentation in September 2016 at the Australasian Integrative Medicine Association (AIMA) conference in Sydney.
